The Indy Power Rankings Results For June 22, 2015

Here we go with the Top 10 independent stars of the world as well as the top five tag teams of the world this week on the Indy Power Rankings on The Barbwire Blog; where we rank the best professional wrestlers from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico, from Europe to Japan. we’ll count down the 10 most popular wrestlers as well as the 5 most popular tag teams in the world this week, hot off the votes from the online poll as well as the votes from independent wrestling writers for the week ending June 22, 2015. Now, on with the countdown!

Indy Power Rankings for the Week of June 22nd, 2015
#1 Jimmy Rave (@TheJimmyRave)-THE biggest shock of the year comes to us from Georgia this past weekend as Jimmy Rave bursts back into the public eye after he competed at AWE’s Georgia Wrestling Crown Tournament on 6/18. In the first round he defeated Kyle Matthews & Sugar D, then beat Raphael King in the semi-finals, and then beat Chip Day in the finals to win the tournament. A 3-0 week and a victory in a tournament gets Jimmy Rave his first official ranking which just so happens to be a #1. With him picking up GFW dates going forward, can he build on this ranking or will it be a short stop on the indies?

#2 Johnny Gargano (@JohnnyGargano)-“The Whole Shebang” and the current Smash Champion returns to the Top 10 after he defeated DJ Z at AAW on 6/19 and then defeated Tommaso Ciampa at ESW on 6/20 in an indy dream match. A 2-0 week (outside of NXT) gets Gargano another ranking as he’s enjoying a very prosperous year thus far. Over the last 3 years since the inception of the Indy Power Rankings, Gargano has been the most consistent wrestler of anyone who has been ranked in the Top 10. Can he keep it going or will the WWE come calling? We can only hope for the best for one of the best in the world.

#3 Louis Lyndon (@LouisLyndon31)-It’s been a while since we’ve seen Lyndon in the Top 10, but this weekend was special for the high flyer. He is the NEW AAW Heritage Champion after defeating Christian Faith for the title on 6/19. He followed that up with a big win over Kunai the Silent Warrior at PGP on 6/20 to go 2-0 for the week. With wins in 7 of his last 9 matches, Lyndon is on a bit of a roll and looks to continue that success going forward. He’d been lost in the shuffle over the last year and a half or so, but perhaps now is the time when he shines bright on the indies once again.

#4 Johnny Evers-Once again the Indy Power Rankings is TRULY International as Johnny Evers competed in the Catch Cup at PWAS in Belgium on 6/20 where he defeated Dragan Spazic in the first round, then beat Kid Lux in the semi-finals and then beat Gabriel Angelfyre to win the Catch Cup to go 3-0 for the week. Impressive weekend as Evers grabs his first ranking in the Top 10. Much of the international talent like this has been one and done in the past. Can Evers change that trend?

#5 Soner Durson-We get another first-timer to the Indy Power Rankings Top 10 as Durson competed in and won the Lotto Thunder Tournament over the weekend at FSW in the UK on 6/21. He defeated Dave Rayn in the First Round, then beat Jack Gallagher in the semi-finals, and then beat Rampage Brown in the finals to win the tournament to go 3-0 for the week. Durson makes his first appearance after beating some stiff competition. It’s never an easy task to compete in the UK and be consistent. Durson will have his work cut out for him to continue to make a splash in 2015.

#6 Ultimo Dragon-Once again Ultimo Dragon makes an appearance in the Top 10. The NWA International Junior Heavyweight Champion and 1/2 of All Asia Tag Team Champions teamed with Yoshinobu Kanemaru at AJPW on 6/15 to defeat SUSHI & Yohei Nakajima, then teamed with Yoshinobu Kanemaru on 6/17 to defeat Hikaru Sato & Yuma Aoyagi, then defeated Yohei Nakajima on 6/18, then teamed with The Bodyguard & Yoshinobu Kanemaru on 6/19 to defeat Jake Lee, Jun Akiyama & SUSHI, and then teamed with Yoshinobu Kanemaru on 6/21 to defeat SUSHI & Yohei Nakajima to go 5-0 for the week. Even at his age, Ultimo Dragon is absolutely KILLING IT in 2015. Hard to believe, but absolutely true.

#7 Masaaki Mochizuki-Dragon Gate once again gets another member of their roster in the Top 10 this week as Mochizuki went 5-0 on the week. He teamed with Kzy on 6/15 at Dragon Gate to defeat Jimmy Kanda and Gamma, then defeated Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria on 6/16, then teamed with Dragon Kid on 6/20 to defeat Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! and Jimmy Susumu, then defeated Mondai Ryu on 6/21, and then defeated Punch Tominaga the same day. If he can keep this type of success going, he’s going to be a strong contender for a high spot in the 2015 IPR 100.

#8 Akira Tozawa (@TozawaAkira)-Perhaps the most dominant Japanese talent to appear in the Top 10 in 2015 returns again this week as the Dragon Gate Open the Brave Gate and Open the Owarai Gate Champion teamed with Masato Yoshino at Dragon Gate on 6/15 to defeat T-Hawk and Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria, then teamed with Masato Yoshino and Shingo Takagi to defeat YAMATO, Naruki Doi and Punch Tominaga on 6/16, then defeated Jimmy Kanda on 6/20, and then teamed with Masato Yoshino and Shingo Takagi on 6/21 to defeat Millenials (T-Hawk, Eita and Kotoka) to go 4-0 for the week. Tozawa has just been UNSTOPPABLE in 2015, but can he claim the top spot in the 2015 IPR 100?

#9 Zack Sabre Jr. (@zacksabrejr)-This technical wizard returns to the Top 10 again after a 3-0 week in the UK and Japan. He teamed with Daisuke Harada & Yoshinari Ogawa at NOAH on 6/15 to defeat BRAVE (Atsushi Kotoge & Taiji Ishimori) & Hitoshi Kumano,  then teamed with Quiet Storm on 6/19 to defeat Genba Hirayanagi & Hitoshi Kumano at NOAH, and then defeated William Eaver at PROGRESS. Sabre has been amazing in 2015, but the one thing that may be holding him back is a major singles title. If he can pick one up in the near future, there’s no doubt he’ll continue to be showcased in the Top 10.

#10 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-The most dominant female wrestler in the U.S. (and perhaps most dominant wrestler, period) once again gets ranked this week after she defeated MJ Knight at OPW on 6/16 to run her win streak to around 19 straight matches. This multiple champion has been almost unbeatable this year and she looks to continue that success heading into next week’s IPR 100 Mid-Year Update. Tune in to find out where Santana ranks!

People’s Champ. Joey Ryan (@JoeyRyanOnline)-There was a bit of controversy again in the online voting competition as when the competition ended at 10 PM EST, Joey Ryan had the lead. He IS this week’s People’s Champ, but if you check the poll you will see that Alex Titan collected more votes after the cut off. Regardless both men really did a hell of a job of getting votes from Australia this week. Hopefully we see more battles like this in the online poll in the future!

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of June 22nd, 2015
#1 Ultimo Dragon & Yoshinobu Kanemaru-Well, who would have thought in 2015 we’d be featuring Ultimo Dragon at the top of any of our rankings? It was a strange week in both singles and tags, as there was certainly quite a bit of nostalgia, BUT Ultimo Dragon & Yoshinobu Kanemaru certainly deserved the #1 spot this week after being the only team with a 4-0 week. The All Asia Tag Team Champions defeated SUSHI & Yohei Nakajima on AJPW on 6/15, then defeated Hikaru Sato & Yuma Aoyagi at AJPW on 6/17, then teamed with The Bodyguard on 6/19 to defeat Jake Lee, Jun Akiyama & SUSHI, and then defeated SUSHI and Yohei Nakajima on 6/21 to wrap up the week. Congrats to them on their first #1 ranking heading into the Tag Team Top 50 Mid-Year Update on July 1st!
#2 Killer Elite Squad (Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr.)-The former #1’s and current NWA/GHC Tag Team Champions return to the Top 5 this week after a very good week. The closest competition for this week’s #1 ranking teamed with Taichi and Shelton Benjamin at NOAH on 6/15 to defeat TMDK (Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste, Chris Hero & Jack Gamble) and then defeated Chris Hero & Colt Cabana on 6/19 to retain the GHC Tag Team Titles. After a FANTASTIC 2014, 2015 appears to be even better. Where will they rank next week for the Mid-Year update? Tune in to find out!
#3 Hunter Brothers (Jim & Lee Hunter @JimNLeeHunter)-The LCW and Kamikaze Pro Tag Team Champions were also viable contenders for the top spot this week after they defeated The London Riots (James Davis & Rob Lynch), The GZRS (Sebastian & Tom Irvin) & The Regression (Paul Robinson & “The Omega” Isaac Zercher) in a four-way #1 contenders tag team match at Progress Wrestling on 6/21 and then defeated Mika & Elliott Jordan, The YOLO Squad (Drew Parker & Ethan Silver) & Omari & Liam Doyle at Kamikaze Pro the same day to retain the titles and go 2-0 for the week. The UK has produced some top tag teams over the last couple of years and the Hunter Brothers are a product of that.
#4 Monster Express (Akira Tozawa & Masato Yoshino)-This Dragon Gate factions in all sorts of different forms continues to pop up in the Tag Team Top 5 as they continue their push for various spots in the Tag Team Top 50. This past week they defeated Millenials (T-Hawk and Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria) at Dragon Gate on 6/15, then teamed with Shingo Takagi on 6/16 to defeat MAD BLANKEY (YAMATO, Naruki Doi and Punch Tominaga) and then teamed with Shingo Takagi on 6/21 to defeat Millenials (T-Hawk, Eita and Kotoka) to go 3-0 for the week. While they had a strong case #1 spot this week, they didn’t receive any #1 votes from any of the official voters and only one vote from the fans.
#5 Team IOU (@TeamIOU Kerry Awful & Nick Iggy)-Last year’s surprise tag team continue to try to get back to where they were last year as they went 2-0 over the weekend with a couple of big wins. “Death” was the theme of the weekend as the PGP Tag Team Champions teamed to defeat the Death Dealers on 6/19 and then defeated The Death Machines (Stephen King & Nate Redwing) on 6/20 to retain the titles. IOU may not be in quite as many high profile matches as they were in 2014, but they’re doing their best to continue to put on better quality matches and not just quantity on a weekly basis.
People’s Champs. Seth Tylors & Nick Skitz-It was a slow week in the tag team voting competition but QWA brought some strong representation this week as Tylors & Skitz won the online voting competition by a very narrow margin. Their win vs. The Choff & Karlos Aries at QWA in Australia on 6/21 got them on the poll and their fans took care of the rest.
