Good Guys Of The Week:
And now, here we go with the Top 10 independent stars of the world as well as the top five tag teams of the world this week on the Indy Power Rankings on The Barbwire Blog; where we rank the best professional wrestlers from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico, from Europe to Japan. We’ll count down the 10 most popular wrestlers as well as the 5 most popular tag teams in the world this week, hot off the votes from the online poll as well as the votes from independent wrestling writers for the week ending July 20, 2015. Now, on with the countdown!
Indy Power Rankings for the Week of July 20th, 2015
#1 Tommaso Ciampa (@ProjectCiampa)-After toiling away and kicking ass on the indies for the last few years, Tommaso Ciampa collects his very first #1 ranking this week. While Ciampa didn’t win any titles or tournaments, he had two of the most impressive victories of the entire weekend as he defeated Chris Hero at AAW on 7/17 and then beat Eddie Kingston at House of Hardcore on 7/18 to go 2-0 on the weekend. It may have just been perfect timing, but this #1 ranking is long overdue for “The Sicilian Psychopath” who has been having a great couple of years.
#2 Masato Tanaka-Is this really 2015? With names like Ultimo Dragon and Masato Tanaka popping up all the time, it’s hard to tell what year it is. Tanaka went 3-0 last week, defeating Fujita Hayato at Zero1 on 7/16, then defeated Kintaro Kanemura at Naoshi Sano Produce on 7/17, and then defeated Kamikaze at Zero1 on 7/19. He was one of the few viable contenders for a #1 ranking this week, but he didn’t quite grab that elusive #1. That being said, with 9 straight wins to his credit, perhaps a #1 ranking isn’t that far off?
#3 Jack Thriller (@JackThriller9)-What a week for “The Serial Killer” as the FWF Cruiserweight Champion defeated Ryan Epic in the first round of the RCW James Wilson Memorial Tournament on 7/18 and then beat Ruff Crossing, Remi Wilkins, and Chase Matthews in the Finals to win the tournament the same day. He followed that up with a win vs. Roger Lanier at FWF on 7/18 to retain his title AND run his record to 3-0 on the week. It’s been a while since we saw Thriller in the Top 10, but that doesn’t take away from his success recently. He’s been as good as anyone in the Midwest as of late.
#4 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-It’s another week and another title win for the Mid-Year IPR 100 #1. We’ve said it before, but “Ultimo Dragon 2K15” has been beating everyone that is put in front of her, whether they’re male or female. Not only that, she’s collecting more and more titles where ever she goes. Don’t believe it? Well she defeated Su Yung on 7/17 to win the CWE Vixens Title and then beat her again to retain the NWA World Women’s Title on 7/19 to go 2-0 on the week. Likely the only thing that kept her from the top spot again this week was her lack of variety of opponents, BUT she can only beat who is put in front of her and THAT she has done 25 straight times.
#5 Abyss (@THEREALABYSS)-This marks the first time that Abyss has cracked the Indy Power Rankings Top 10. After mostly working TNA exclusively for a very long time, he’s been more active on the indies over the last year or so. He parlayed that into 3 big victories in the UK as he beat Medallion at Target Wrestling on 7/17, then beat Jimmy Havoc in a Monster’s Ball Match at SWE on 7/18, and then won another Monster’s Ball Match vs. Clint Margera at Kamikaze Pro on 7/19 to go 3-0 on the week. Abyss was another viable contender for the top spot this week showing how much parity there was all over the ballots.
#6 Brandon Espinosa (@The_B_Espinosa)-Very successful week for Espinosa as he defeated Mike Outlaw at WLW on 7/14, then beat John E. Rock and Dustin Bozworth in a Triple Threat at WLW on 7/15, and then beat Keon Option at SICW on 7/17. The only thing that may have kept him from a higher ranking was the unknown result of his match on 7/19 as that could have made a difference as to whether he was 4-0 or 3-1 this past week. Regardless of that result, a #6 ranking was well-deserved after racking up 3 straight wins to get himself ranked for the first time in quite a while.
#7 Lio Rush (@itsLiBro)-Lio Rush’s commitment to wrestling led him to a victory at MCW over the weekend, which was likely the biggest win of his career as he won the prestigious Shamrock Cup for 2015. With wins vs. Kai Katana and then a HUGE win vs. some of the top talents in the world in Shane Strickland, Matt Cross, Eddie Edwards, Brandon Scott, and Drolix in a 6 Way Elimination Match, he likely should have been ranked much higher. Democracy at its worst or best? Tough to say, but regardless, congrats to Lio Rush on his first ranking and the HUGE tournament win!
#8 Hy Zaya-The IWA Mid-South World Champion and CCW Heavyweight Champion collects yet another ranking this week as he went 2-0 with two impressive victories over the weekend. First, he defeated Shane Mercer to retain the IWA World Title on 7/17 and then followed that up with a tremendous victory vs. Lee Byford on 7/18 at CCW to retain the CCW Heavyweight Title. With IWA taking a break in August and CCW’s status up in the air, time will tell what lies ahead for “The Hood Ninja.”
#9 Ruffy Silverstein-A GREAT week for the PWA Pure Wrestling Champion lands him his first ranking this week as he defeated Ryan Swift on 7/17 to retain the title, then defeated Aiden Rayne the same day, then defeated Eddie Osbourne, HardKore Hick, “EZE” Eric Cairnie, Juan Ortiz, Reggie Marley, Big Al and Elian Habanero in an elimination match on 7/18 to retain the title and then defeated Reggie Marley and Sid Summers in a triple threat match on 7/19 to retain the title to go 4-0 for the week. This may be a name that a lot of people aren’t familiar with yet, but with 9 straight wins, perhaps that will change soon.
#10 Heidi Lovelace (@HeidiLovelace)-She has returned from injury and has returned to the Top 10! The RCW Heavyweight Champion teamed with Candice LeRae at AAW on 7/17 to defeat Allysin Kay & Taeler Hendrix and then beat Melanie Cruise at RCW on 7/18 to retain the title. A 2-0 week squeaks her into the Top 10 on a very competitive week. With her now seemingly healthy, expect her career to continue to spike upwards as 2015 rolls on.
Honorable Mention. Ronnie Jenkins-He JUST misses out on cracking the Top 10 as he defeated Freight Train in the first round; then “Nacho Butcher” and Cliff Compton in a three-way in the semifinals; then defeated Joey Ryan in the final to win the IWA Deep South Softcore Cup on 7/18 and go 3-0 for the week.
People’s Champ. Tommy Nova (@RCTommyNova)-Big victory in the online voting competition for the UBW Heavyweight Champion. He defeated Sween on 7/18 to retain the title and then collected 118 of 483 votes to win this week’s People’s Champ award. Congratulations to him on his first mention in the IPR!
Others missing out/receiving votes:
Josef Von Schmidt
Big Damo O’Connor
Billy Ken Kid
Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of July 13th, 2015
#1 OI4K (Dave & Jake Crist)-For the second time this year, Ohio is for Killers reign as the top tag team in the Tag Team Top 5. The AAW Tag Team Champions bounced back this week with a BIG victory vs. The Hooligans to retain the titles in a battle of two of the very best tag teams in all the indies. While they no longer have the CZW World Tag Team Titles around their waists, this tag team is still one of the best and most relevant tag teams anywhere. Can they continue their push for the #1 spot in the year-end Tag Team Top 50?
#2 Ophidian & Silver Ant-The only other team that got support for the #1 spot comes to us from CHIKARA (and actually, Mexico) this week. Despite no support in the fan vote, they had a good week as they defeated Saru & Teelo and Emperador Azteca & Psycho Kid in a triple threat at Chilanga Mask in Mexico on 7/19 in the semis and then defeated Impulso & Juana la Loca to win the Torneo de Parejas and go 2-0 for the week. This tag team secured their first ranking with some unlikely success in Mexico over the weekend. It will be interesting to see if they can keep this momentum going.
#3 So Scandalous (Damian Dunne & Ryan Smile)-This tag team gets their first ranking despite no titles to their credit. What they did was defeated some of Europe’s finest tag teams as they defeated Stixx & Toni Storm, The Hunter Brothers, and The Sumerian Death Squad at SWE on 7/18. With a win like that, you have to assume titles may be in their future. If that’s the case, this won’t be the last you see of them in the Tag Team Top 5 in 2015. Congrats to them on their first ranking as a team.
#4 Team 3D (Bully Ray & DeVon)-One of the biggest victories of the weekend belonged to one of the most decorated tag teams in wrestling history as they defeated one of the most decorated tag teams in INDEPENDENT (and more) wrestling history. Team 3D scored a measure of revenge as they avenged their 2CW Tag Team Title loss by defeating The Young Bucks at House of Hardcore on 7/18. With 8 wins in their last 9 matches outside of TNA and New Japan, Team 3D is looking to dominate the indies just like they have everywhere else they’ve been.
#5 Damian el Terrible & Rey Bucanero-Mexico makes an impact in the Tag Team Top 5 as this tag team JUST missed out last week, but rejoins the fray this week after they teamed with Euforia on 7/13 at CMLL to defeat Marco Corleone, Maximo & Rush and then teamed with Vangelis on 7/18 to defeat Blue Panther, La Mascara & Maximo to go 2-0 for the week. The only thing that likely kept them from being higher this week was their lack of straight-up 2 on 2 tag team victories.
People’s Champs. The NPC (Xander Litt @XanderLitt and Nathaniel Carr @NathanielCarr83)-The online voting competition was pretty close this week but in the end it was the PWA CT Tag Team Champions who came out on top after defeating The Normals on 7/20 to retain the titles. Congratulations to them on their first People’s Champs award!
