And now, here we go with the Top 10 independent stars of the world as well as the top five tag teams of the world this week on the Indy Power Rankings on The Barbwire Blog; where we rank the best professional wrestlers from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico, from Europe to Japan. We’ll count down the 10 most popular wrestlers as well as the 5 most popular tag teams in the world this week, hot off the votes from the online poll as well as the votes from independent wrestling writers for the week ending August 3, 2015. Now, on with the countdown!

Indy Power Rankings For August 3, 2015

#1 El Desperado (@0_desperado)-It’s another surprise #1 this week as ½ of the GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions defeated Hitoshi Kumano at NOAH on 7/28, then defeated Zack Sabre Jr. on 7/30, then defeated Kenou on 8/1, and then finished off the week when he teamed with Shelton Benjamin & Taichi on 8/2 to defeat Akitoshi Saito, Captain NOAH & Mikey Nicholls to go 4-0 for the week. This #1 ranking is not only his first time at the top spot of the Top 10, but his first time in the Top 10, PERIOD. It was an impressive week to say the least for a wrestler who may be more known for his tag team exploits.

#2 Samoa Joe (@SamoaJoe)-Despite having his attentions elsewhere, Samoa Joe still dominated NEW over the weekend where he defeated Donovan Dijak on 8/1 and then beat Hanson on 8/2 to go 2-0 on the weekend. While his days on the indies may be numbered, his impact has been very important despite a very brief time since his departure from TNA. The Samoan Submission Machine has been winning matches left and right and again, though his time on the indies may be at a close, he’ll still likely end up in the year-end IPR 100 like Drake Younger last year.

#3 Kaz Hayashi (@kaz_hayashi)-In terms of Japanese wrestling, 2015 seems to be a year of nostalgia with Ultimo Dragon, Masato Tanaka, and now Kaz Hayashi making waves in singles. At Wrestle1 on 8/2 he defeated Akira in the first round, then defeated Hiroshi Yamato in the second round the same day, and then teamed with Minoru Tanaka, Shuji Kondo & MAZADA the same day to defeat AKIRA, Hiroshi Yamato, Andy Wu & Hiroki Murase to go 3-0 for the week. Time will tell if he can keep this run going as 2015 rolls on.

#4 Matt Taven (@MattTaven)-The former ROH TV Champion and current NEW Heavyweight Champion (and ½ of the ICW Tag Team Champions) defeated Hanson on 8/1 to retain the title and then teamed with Michael Bennett at NEW on 8/2 to defeat The Young Bucks to go 2-0 for the week. Much of his time in 2015 has been occupied by ROH and New Japan, but this weekend he emerged with a very high ranking after proving his worth yet again on the Northeast independent wrestling scene.

#5 Rey Mysterio (@reymysterio)-Mysterio gets his first singles ranking as he teamed with El Patron Alberto at NEW on 8/1 to defeat The Young Bucks and then defeated El Patron Alberto and Matt Hardy in a Triple Threat on 8/2 at NEW to go 2-0 for the week. Mysterio is now undefeated in his last 12 matches and has gotten on quite the roll for himself. If he can keep this going, he could be a top contender in the year-end IPR 100.

#6 Joe Coffey-The Target Champion and ½ of the W3L Tag Team Champions defeated Chris Hero at Discovery on 7/31 and then beat Kid Fite at ICW on 8/2 to go 2-0 for the week. With 7 straight victories, Joe Coffey is lighting up the UK right now. It was a great weekend for Coffey as he defeated one of the very best in the world in Chris Hero and a rising star in Kid Fite. Expect more big things from Coffey this year.

#7 Kohei Sato-It was a FANTASTIC week for Sato who racked up 6 wins in Japan, but it was the one loss that kept him from an almost sure thing at #1 this week. He defeated Kamikaze on 7/27 at Zero1, then teamed with Ikuto Hidaka & Jason Lee to defeat Daemon-gun (Masakado & Takuya Sugawara) & Ryouji Sai on 7/28, then teamed with Jason Lee & Ikuto Hidaka on 7/29 to defeat Daemon-gun (Masakado & Takuya Sugawara) & Buffa, then defeated Masato Tanaka on 7/30, then teamed with Toshiki Iwaki on 8/1 to lose to Yoshikazu Yokoyama & Yusaku Obata, then defeated James Raideen in the semifinals on 8/2, and then defeated Daisuke Sekimoto in the final the same day to win the Fire Festival tournament.

#8 Big Daddy Walter (@BigDaddyAUT)-A 3-0 week gets one of Germany’s finest his first ranking in quite some time. He teamed with Johnny Rancid & Michael de Marc at wXw in Germany on 8/1 to defeat Toby Blunt, Steve Valentino & Francis Kaspin in the morning session; then teamed with Toby Blunt & Francis Kaspin to defeat Kim Ray, Johnny Rancid & Michael de Marc in the afternoon session, and then teamed with Toby Blunt to defeat Chris Brookes & Manka in the evening session.

#9 Joseph Conners (@JosephConners)-The LCW Champion defeated HOP Full Throttle Champion Danny Chase by DQ on 8/1, then teamed with Stevie Mitchell the same night to defeat Alex Grace & Danny Chase, and then defeated Robbie X at NGW UK on 8/2 to go 3-0 for the week. Conners has popped up from time to time on the Indy Power Rankings poll and this was one of his true breakthrough weeks as he continues to make a name for himself.

#10 Mickie James (@MickieJames)-The MCW Women’s Champion defeated Mandy James at NEW on 8/1 and then beat Alexxis on 8/2 to go 2-0 for the week. She enters the Top 10 for the first time as she has been having some good success outside of GFW and TNA. While it’s arguable that her best years may be behind her, she’s still working hard to help out some of the other young female stars on the indies.

People’s Champ. Alex Titan (@alextitanx)-“The King of Sleaze” (Australian edition) collected 403 votes and EASILY won the online voting competition once again after he defeated Matt Bailey at HVW in Australia on 8/1. Keep looking out for him as his popularity continues to soar in the Land Down Under.
