And now, here we go with the Top 10 independent stars of the world as well as the top five tag teams of the world this week on the Indy Power Rankings on The Barbwire Blog; where we rank the best professional wrestlers from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico, from Europe to Japan. We’ll count down the 10 most popular wrestlers as well as the 5 most popular tag teams in the world this week, hot off the votes from the online poll as well as the votes from independent wrestling writers for the week ending August 31, 2015. Now, on with the countdown!
Indy Power Rankings for the Week of September 7th, 2015
#1 Ethan Case (@EthanCaseClosed)-It was another hotly contested vote among the official voters this week as it (in a way) was The Carolinas vs. Death Match Supporters. At the end of the day, the official voters with Ethan Case at #1 on their official ballots felt he had a better strength of schedule combined with his flawless win-loss record than anyone else this week. The PWI Ultra J Champion has been mostly known for tag success at PWX until this past weekend where he defeated Jake Manning, then Trevor Lee, then Ricochet, and finally Cedric Alexander in the finals of the #X16 Tournament to go 4-0 for the week to win the tournament. It truly was a magical weekend for a guy that hasn’t gotten enough credit for his work over the last few years.
#2 MASADA-The only other top contender for the #1 spot in the Indy Power Rankings this week after winning the Nick Gage Invitational. The much-talked about tournament may have been notable for the fact that Gage couldn’t appear at the tournament, but it has also been getting rave reviews from those in attendance. MASADA defeated Corporal Robinson (the #2 from a couple of weeks ago), Nate Hatred, and Danny Havoc to win the tournament despite the strange circumstances surrounding it. Despite not quite getting the #1 spot, give props to MASADA for coming through with a hell of a weekend in Jersey.
#3 Ilja Dragunov-The GWF Next Step Champion represented his country (Russia) proudly once again as he defeated Marty Fabz on 9/4 at wXw, then beat Marty Fabz again on 9/5 at GWF, then beat Kerang the same night, and then beat Da Mack at wXw on 9/6 to go 4-0 for the week. He has been having an impressive couple of years and it has paid off once again with a very good ranking in the Top 10. He is undefeated in his last 7 matches (6 wins, 1 draw) and looks to continue a strong push to the end of the year IPR 100. Can he make the cut?
#4 John Skyler (@TheJohnSkyler)-The man that we proclaimed the “King of the Carolinas” several months ago returns to the Top 10 this week to once again represent his territory. The PWX Heavyweight Champion (and WrestleForce Champion) defeated Zane Riley on 9/4 at PWX to retain the title and then teamed with Country Jacked (Adam Page & Corey Hollis) and Gunner on 9/6 to defeat Moose, Tim Donst, Tommaso Ciampa, and Shane Strickland to go 2-0 for the week. With 6 straight victories, Skyler has returned from China with a vengeance! Look out for more big things from him in 2015.
#5 BxB Hulk-Despite very little support in the online voting competition, BxB Hulk’s 4-0 weekend earned him the #5 spot this week to continue his impressive year. On 9/1 he defeated Shachihoko BOY at Dragon Gate, then teamed with La Flamita on 9/2 to defeat Genki Horiguchi HAGeeMee & T-Hawk, then teamed with Dragon Kid and La Flamita on 9/5 to defeat Jimmyz (Jimmy Susumu, Jimmy Kanda and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) and then teamed with Masaaki Mochizuki on 9/6 to defeat T-Hawk and Yosuke (loves) Santa Maria. The one thing that likely kept him from a higher ranking this week was his lack of BIG singles victories. Dragon Gate has been a force to reckon with this year.
#6 Jake Dirden (@DirdEYTV)-“DirDEY” Jake Dirden returns to the Top 10 for the first time in quite some time as the wild man from Missouri went 2-0 on the week. The Dynamo Pro Heavyweight Champion defeated Brandon Aarons on 9/5 to retain the title and then scored a tremendous victory when he beat Davey Richards on 9/6 to retain the title once again. He is now 8-2-1 in his last 11 matches outside of ROH proving that he’s as dominant as any big man on the United States independent scene.
#7 Takatoshi Matsumoto-Matsumoto gets his first ranking this week after defeating Kotaru Nasu at Hard Hit on 9/5, then beating Yujiro Yamamoto in the semifinals; then defeated Kenta Hattori in the final to win the 2nd Next Contenders 1 Day Tournament to go 3-0 for the week. While a lot of the victories weren’t over the perceived “top” talent in Japan, it’s still influential to win a tournament on a week where there is so much parity. We hope to see bigger and better things from Matsumoto in the near future.
#8 Santana Garrett (@SantanaGarrett_)-The SHINE Champion (and NWA, CWE, Vixens, Ring Warriors, Battling Bombshells, and OPW Women’s Champion) defeated Allysin Kay at SHINE on 9/4 to retain the title. It was one of the most high profile matches of the weekend and while there are others with more victories this past week, her record in her last 36 matches outside of GFW (35 wins and 1 draw) is absolutely phenomenal. No other talent has been as consistently ranked in 2015 as Santana Garrett. She was the Mid-Year #1 in the IPR 100. Will that carry over into the official #1 for the year? Stay tuned…
#9 Ricochet (@KingRicochet)-Although Cedric Alexander actually got further in the #X16 Tournament over the weekend, Ricochet’s strength of competition, impressive victories, and overall reputation helped carry him to the #9 spot this week ahead of Alexander who just missed out on the Top 10 this week. With wins vs. former #1 Caleb Konley, Moose, and Andrew Everett, Ricochet seemed poised for another #1 this week before finally losing to Ethan Case in the semi-finals. It’s been kind of a slow year on the indies for Ricochet this year compared to 2014, but he’s still doing great work!
#10 Mark Andrews (@MAndrewsTNA)-Despite only having a 2-1 record over the weekend because of a loss in a 6 man tag team match vs. The United Nations, he did defeat Mascara Purpura, Ophidian, and Pinkie Sanchez on 9/5 in the semi-finals of the Rey de Voladores 2015 and then beat Shynron on 9/6 in the finals to win the tournament. While his record wasn’t quite flawless, the tournament absolutely holds some weight among the official voters and did just enough to slip him into the #10 spot.
People’s Champ. James Anthony (@87JamesAnthony)-The AIWF Mid-Atlantic Cruiserweight Champion and ½ of the PWF Tag Team Champions defeated Shaun Johnson at UWC on 9/4 to get himself on the ballot for a second straight week and for a second straight week, he won the online voting competition! 109 votes collected and James Anthony continues his RISE up on the indies with his 9th straight People’s Champ award overall. LOOK OUT FOR HIM.
Honorable Mention. Karsten Beck (@thebeckstasy)-“The Maestro of professional wrestling” just missed out on the Top 10 as the wXw Unified World Wrestling Champion defeated Johnny Rancid at wXw on 9/4 in a non-title match, then defeated Doug Williams & Rambo in a triple threat at GWF to retain the wXw title, and then teamed with Reich und Schön (Marius van Beethoven & Kevin Roadster) at wXw on 9/6 to defeat “Bad Bones” John Klinger, Mike Schwarz & Rick Baxxter to go 3-0 for the week.
Honorable Mention. Io Shirai-The Wonder of Stardom and ½ of Goddess of Stardom Champions defeated Kaori Yoneyama at Stardom on 9/4; then teamed with Mayu Iwatani to defeat Hudson Envy and La Rosa Negra on 9/5 to retain the Goddess of Stardom titles; then defeated La Rosa Negra on 9/6 to go 3-0 for the week.

Tag Team Top 5 for the Week of September 7th, 2015
#1 Team AAA (Aero Star, Drago & Fenix)-CHIKARA’s King of Trios crowns another #1 tag team (or in this case…3-man tag team this year as Team AAA came out on top in perhaps the most prestigious “Trios tournament” in the United States. Maybe even the world. It was another truly historic year for this big tournament as this team defeated The Gentleman’s Club (Chuck Taylor, Drew Gulak & The Swamp Monster) at Chikara on 9/4 in the first round, then defeated The Nightmare Warriors (Frightmare, Hallowicked & Silver Ant) on 9/5 in the quarterfinals, then defeated The Devastation Corporation (Blaster McMassive, Flex Rumblecrunch & Max Smashmaster) on 9/6 in the semifinals, and then defeated Bullet Club (AJ Styles, Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) in the final to win the 2015 King of Trios and go 4-0 for the week. Even with this ranking, there’s no guarantee they’ll be a lock for the Tag Team Top 50 this year. Can they achieve more in 2015 as a team?
#2 BULLET CLUB (AJ Styles & The Young Bucks)-In an unprecedented move for the official voters, a team that got to the finals of a tournament but didn’t win was actually voted into the #2 spot this week. In the past, talents have been ranked after losing a tournament, but never as highly as #2…which tells you a lot about this year’s King of Trios. This seemingly unstoppable three-man team defeated Battle Hive (Amasis & The Colony (Fire Ant & Worker Ant) at Chikara on 9/4 in the first round, then defeated Battleborn (Kevin Condron, Lucas Calhoun & Missile Assault Man) on 9/5 in the quarterfinals, then defeated Team Fight Club Pro (Daniel Moloney & Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven & Tyler Bate) in the semifinals on 9/6, but then lost to Team AAA (Aero Star, Drago & Fenix) in the final to go 3-1 for the week. Despite the loss in the finals, it was a hell of a run for one of the best “trios” teams in the entire world. If they team more outside of NJPW and ROH, we might see more of them in the Tag Team Top 5.
#3 Country Jacked (Corey Hollis & Adam Page)-Essentially if CHIKARA’s King of Trios had not taken place this past weekend, it’s likely that the NEW PWX Tag Team Champions would be sitting in the #1 spot this week. The Kings of Carolina Tag Team wrestling became NEW PWX Tag Team Champions (to go along with their WrestleForce Tag Titles) when they defeated The Bravados (Harlem & Lancelot Bravado) at PWX on 9/5 to win the titles and then teamed with John Skyler & Gunner at PWX on 9/6 to defeat Moose, Tim Donst, Tomasso Ciampa and Shane Strickland to go 2-0 for the week. PWX was all over both the singles’ Top 10 and now the Tag Team Top 5 this week. PWX truly is a major player on the indies right now.
#4 Sumerian Death Squad (Tommy End & Michael Dante)-This European tag team continues to impress and just continues to get themselves ranked in the Top 5. The former #1’s and current PROGRESS Tag Team Champions issued an open challenge and came out on top when they defeated two members of the former Dojo Bros stable in Roderick Strong & Adam Cole on 9/6 to retain the titles. On a week with teams with multiple wins all over the place, SDS showed that they could take on the top talent from around the world and come out on top AND get ranked yet again.
#5 Iceberg & Tank-This tag team came out of nowhere to impress the official voters and get themselves ranked this week. This duo teamed on 9/4 and defeated Terry Lawler & Scotty Beach at DragonCon in Atlanta in the semifinals of the DCW Tag Team Cup and then defeated Murder One & Chip Day and Washington Bullets (Jon & Trey Williams) the same day to go 2-0 for the week to win the tournament. Pretty extraordinary week for a team who has yet to be ranked or mentioned and with this ranking, we hope to see more of them throughout the rest of 2015.
People’s Champs. B.A.D. (Yukon Mike & Chris Morrus)-The EMERGE Tag Team Champions won the online voting competition this week and ALMOST got themselves ranked this week on the strength of their big victory vs. the Young Dragons (Ace Perry & Dale Patricks) on 9/5 to retain the titles. On any other week, they likely would have cracked the Top 5, but for now, they get to take home this week’s “People’s Champs” award.
